Women in Tattooing Spotlight – Olie

John Dietrich

A Ukrainian native who now works in Warsaw, Poland, Olie Siiz has made a name for herself in the tattoo industry. Her instagram page boasts over one hundred thousand followers, and she seamlessly weaves together her interests in travel and fashion with her passion for tattooing. If you browse through her portfolio, you’ll quickly discover that her specialty lies in a Neo-Traditional style, timeless art with a modern spin.

Since her art stood out to us so much, we decided to get in touch with Olie to do a short interview. We asked her all about her experience as a woman in the industry, her best and worst experiences alike.

Q: What is your favorite part of being a tattoo artist?

It is a passion for me. It’s not just a hobby or job; it’s a lifestyle, something that you can’t learn in school or on YouTube. I love to improve myself. I love to meet different people, to listen to their stories and be a part of their lives. I love to inspire other people, because I know how important that can be in someone else’s life.

Q: What are challenges that you’ve encountered as a woman in the tattoo industry?

To be honest, I don’t see any difference between a woman tattoo artist or a male tattoo artist. I always had more guy friends than girl friends, because I found it easier to communicate with them. Almost all of artists who inspired me are men, and I love the rudeness and gloom in their work.

Q: What are your strengths as a tattoo artist?

For me, time is very important: if I’m not working on a project, even for one day, I feel that I forgot something, and I don’t feel the fullness of the day. I like to experiment with color and composition, and I really like to make old things fresh.

Q: What’s your funniest experience tattooing a client?

I don’t have too many funny stories, but I can definitely say that I admire my client’s pain tolerance. I’m really impressed when some of them can endure the pain on their neck for 7 hours. I couldn’t even stand one hour.

Olie is a leader in her industry, and it’s interesting to see how her perspective as a woman has translated to real life successes as a tattoo artist. She’s ambitious, talented, and totally devoted to each person that she tattoos. And, best of all, she loves every minute of it.
